Lincoln could join Taj Mahal and Statue of Liberty in being a world heritage site

LINCOLN'S historical splendour could join that of the Taj Mahal, the Great Barrier Reef and The Great Wall of China in a race for international protected status. Lincoln Cathedral

The city has been included on a list of 38 sites in the UK being considered for UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The coveted tag is given to iconic locations around the world, such as the UK's Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

And it means that the areas it protects are preserved and in a better position to attract funding.

The contenders were announced yesterday by Tourism and Heritage Minister John Penrose.

He said: "The UK's heritage is world class. This list represents the unique variety and history in all corners of this country and our overseas territories."

An independent panel of experts will assess each bid, with a shortlist to be submitted to UNESCO next year.
